About Chris

Chris Avery is the founder and editor of Before You Buy AI, an independent publication that helps businesses, marketers, creators, and developers make smarter AI software purchasing decisions. He leads editorial strategy, evaluation methodology, and every review published on the site.

Before You Buy AI was founded with a simple goal: give buyers a place they can trust before spending money on AI software. That mission shapes every editorial decision here — from how products are chosen for coverage to how ratings are calculated and how commercial relationships are disclosed. If a product isn't the right fit for a particular reader, the review will say so plainly.

Editorial Philosophy

How I approach every review

Four principles guide every review, comparison, and buying guide published on Before You Buy AI.

Independence first

No vendor previews content, pays for placement, or influences a score. Editorial and commercial are separate functions and stay that way.

Write for the buyer

Every review is written for someone spending real money. If a product isn't the right fit for a reader, the review says so plainly.

Show the work

Methodology, rating criteria, update cadence, and affiliate relationships are all published. Nothing about how a rating was reached should be a mystery.

Correct in public

When something is wrong, it gets corrected — with the date and a short note explaining what changed. Trust is built one correction at a time.

Review methodology

  1. 1

Research the product and its buyer

Every review starts with the reader in mind: who is considering this software, what are they trying to accomplish, and what alternatives exist in the category.

  2. 2

    Evaluate documentation, pricing, and features

Public documentation, changelogs, pricing pages, and support policies are all reviewed against the same rubric used for every product on the site.

  3. 3

    Compare against category alternatives

No product is reviewed in isolation. Each is compared to relevant competitors on capability, usability, pricing, and long-term fit.

  4. 4

    Score, cross-check, and publish

Ratings are set against the Before You Buy AI Score™ methodology, cross-checked, and only then paired with any commercial links.
