One scale, every review
AI software categories change fast. A shared 0–10 scale lets you compare a writing tool, an automation platform, and a coding assistant on the same terms — even when they solve very different problems.
Transparent, not mathematical
Scores communicate our editorial team's confidence, not a precise measurement. We publish the categories, the tier meanings, and the reasoning behind each score so you can weigh them against your own needs.
The scale
What each score means
Every Before You Buy AI Score™ falls into one of six tiers. The tier is the important part — the decimal is a directional refinement within the tier.

| 7.0–7.9 | Good | Solid overall. Worth considering for the right use case. |
| 6.0–6.9 | Average | Functional but with notable trade-offs. Compare carefully before buying. |
| 0.0–5.9 | Limited Recommendation | We only suggest this in narrow situations. Better alternatives usually exist. |
How we evaluate
How products earn a score
Research the product
We collect the product's positioning, documentation, pricing, and public roadmap. We identify the intended user and the jobs the tool claims to do.
Evaluate each category
We assess the relevant categories below against clear editorial criteria — not marketing claims. Categories that don't apply are omitted, not padded.
Weigh real-world fit
We consider the audience the product is actually for. A tool built for solo creators isn't penalized for missing enterprise controls, and vice versa.
Update on change
Scores are reviewed when a product ships a meaningful change to pricing, features, or support — and at scheduled intervals for evergreen reviews.
What we measure
Rating categories
Each review uses the subset of categories that apply to the product being evaluated. Definitions stay the same everywhere they appear on the site.

- Setup Experience
- Time and friction from sign-up to first meaningful result.
- Features
- Depth and breadth of the core capabilities for the product's intended use case.
- AI Capabilities
- Quality, reliability, and usefulness of AI-driven functionality in real workflows.
- Automation
- How well the tool automates repetitive work end-to-end without babysitting.
- Integrations
- Coverage and reliability of native connections to the tools teams already use.
- Documentation
- How clear, current, and complete the official documentation is.
- Support
- Responsiveness, quality, and accessibility of vendor support channels.
- Value for Money
- Result delivered relative to what you pay across realistic usage.
- Pricing Flexibility
- Availability of a fair free tier, trial, and plans that grow with your needs.
- Learning Curve
- How steep the path is from first login to confident, day-to-day use.
- Business Value
- Impact on measurable outcomes: revenue, cost, time saved, or output quality.
- Overall Recommendation
- Our editorial team's confidence in recommending this product to its target user.
Scores are one input — not the whole decision
The Before You Buy AI Score™ is a starting point, not a verdict. The "best" AI tool for you depends on your workflow, budget, team size, and the specific problem you're trying to solve. Use the score to shortlist candidates, then read the full review, try the product yourself, and confirm current pricing and terms on the vendor's site before you buy.
We don't claim mathematical precision. Two products with a 9.0 and a 9.1 are, for practical purposes, tied — the reasoning in the review matters more than the decimal.
